What Is Connectism?

Connexus

How well do the connections work together?

Definition

"Integration and performance of connections as a unified system – the capstone of connected influence." (Kim 2026)

In plain terms

Connexus is how well the whole system performs: whether all the connections work together to turn potential into realized influence. It is the capstone of the 5Cs and the one that cannot be engineered directly. Connexus shows up as a result – whether potential, relevance, depth, and density come together into lasting influence.

Why it matters

A system can look strong part by part and still underperform as a whole. Connectism separates two sides of this. Structural connexus is how people, content, and technologies are arranged – the configuration that lets messages flow. Functional connexus is whether that arrangement actually produces results: messages received, shared, and acted on. Strength in one does not guarantee the other.

Questions to ask

  • Are our connections reinforcing one another – or are we strengthening some while weakening others?
  • Who in the organization looks at the whole system, not just individual channels?
  • What signal would tell us the system is drifting apart before results decline?

How it connects

Connexus encompasses the other four Cs, and it feeds back into them: a well-integrated system creates conditions for new, more relevant, and deeper connections. It draws most directly on Connectance and Connectedness – the density of connections and the depth of meaning they carry.
