What Is Connectism?

Connexity

Is it the right connection in the right context?

Definition

"Relevance of connections, capturing whether the right links are made in the right context." (Kim 2026)

In plain terms

Not every connection is a good one. Connexity is about meaningful links – relevance and fit: whether the right things are connected, through the right pathways, in the right context. Connectivity tells you how much linkage exists; connexity tells you whether that linkage is meaningful. In network terms, it resembles routing – whether connections run through the right paths at the right times.

Why it matters

Connexity shifts the question from "Was the message seen?" to "Did it flow through the right pathways, reach receptive people, and fit the moment?" It also covers who carries a message. Influencers, peers, and platforms often reframe what they pass along, so the route shapes the meaning. Where connexity is high, messages move with agility through cultural and social exchange. Where it is low, they stall, get distorted, or stay confined to small circles.

Questions to ask

  • Does this connection make sense to the people on the other end – here, and now?
  • Who carries our message, and how do they reshape it along the way?
  • Are we chasing exposure where we should be seeking fit?

How it connects

Connexity turns possible connections into meaningful ones. Relevant encounters can deepen Connectedness, and the share of connections that are both active and relevant is what Connectance measures.
